This white marble and black onyx set is quite nice. The carving in the black pieces is gorgeous, but the white pieces are a bit marred by the white marble color irregularities which can look like repaired fractures. I presume that they are just variegation in the marble, however. The chess board itself is very lovely – the white and black are very glossy and smooth. I haven’t actually given it to my spouse so the pieces have not yet been played with, but I think that the markings, while not completely traditional for bishops in particular, will be adequate to allow for stimulating games with beautiful stone pieces.
In Katwe, Uganda, two children sit restlessly on a bench, watching their peers play a game of football. Their coach, Robert Katende, spots their reticence, and offers them an alternative. “There is another game you can play.” he suggests. He refers to a board-game – chess. At first, the boys scoff at the suggestion – they’re not interested. That is until Katende describes an anecdote in which he defeated his more privileged peers at university.

If you prefer something more relaxed and refreshing, we also carry a selection of vibrant blue boards. These often feature a matching texture with a completely different tone created by azure hues. Our catalog also showcases Bubinga and maple, dark rosewood, hazelnut, mahogany, Padauk, Sapele and grey tones as well as verdant green.
The board measures 15″ x 15″ overall with a 1 5/8″ square. There are scratches, imperfections and dings, primarily on the wooden frame. This board would best suit a king with a 1″ – 1 1/4″ base. We ha…
Yes, that’s a good set. Usually you would substitute the rosewood for the ebony for Black instead of for the White, but if it works for you, it’s cool. They are well-made, well-weighted, and from a respected dealer.
Extremely clean set and is no reproduction. It is in excellent condition and functions like new. On the underside of the box it is stamped:Made in Western-Germany in purple ink (see photo). You’ll fin…
Heat things up with our fiery red chess boards! Our grey and red Briar board includes dramatic texture that appears almost liquid as it winds through each deep red and dark grey square. Our glossy black and red version includes a similar fluid texture complemented by the stark contrast of intense red on solid black.
For $100 you should be able to get a pretty kick-ass set. Look for “House of Staunton” sets sold on ebay, not directly through the HOS site. They are usually much discounted for some reason. (I personally think a lot of the deep discounted stuff on ebay — esp if its shipping out of NYC/northern jersey — to be swag but what do i know).
I have a question. Between steps 7 and 8, did you run the endges through a jointer or otherwise true them up? Despite my best efforts, the edges after the second glue up are not perfect and I don’t think a border will glue on right. I’m wondering how running the checkerboard wood through the jointer would work, since the grains alternate.
Solid wood chess boards are always higher priced because they are more costly to produce. ‘Custom’ boards are typically always solid wood. They appeal to those looking for true quality and a treasured heirloom. A truly well made solid hardwood chess board can be expected to last for generations.
I was very pleased when I opened this wood chess set. It is all wood and it doesn’t have the crack in the center like many boards with the hinges. I hate those since the hinges frequently break and the crack is a nuisance when pushing pieces over to the enemy territory. This board is solid, not too large to be trouble storing and not too small, as a lot of them are today that look more like a tic-tac-toe board. Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this one is just right.
