This is our first purchase of this item. It will supplement our first place prize for our tournament this year. I was incredibly impressed when it arrived. I’m not normally a fan of travel sets but this might just convert me.

If you decide to go with a wooden board, chess pro Mr. Dlugy advised purchasing the flat as opposed to the fold-up style. “Solid boards are simply more stationary,” he said. Mr. Seirawan agreed: “A flat board is much preferred as the fold is distracting.”
I’m really not one to draw up and go by plans. I really don’t even like following plans. That being said, I do sketch ideas and make notes to figure out my rough needs for a project. This does have draw-backs at times, but I’m still able to “wing-it” with most projects.
R.A. from AZ writes, “I can honestly say that all things considered your chess sets are better than Jaques, because you provide the same if not better quality, but at a price that is much easier to bear.”

Hello, great project thanks for sharing! I’ve just completed the second glue-up and sanded it all down again but I’ve noticed a kink in one of the corners meaning the board does not lay completely flat. Is there anything I can do about this, such as clamp it flat and leave for days hoping it will stretch, or is it something I’m going to have to put up with? (This is my first woodwork project)

For $100 you should be able to get a pretty kick-ass set. Look for “House of Staunton” sets sold on ebay, not directly through the HOS site. They are usually much discounted for some reason. (I personally think a lot of the deep discounted stuff on ebay — esp if its shipping out of NYC/northern jersey — to be swag but what do i know).

As anyone who has bought furniture from IKEA or K-Mart knows veneered particle board does not hold up well to impacts of any sort. The corners are particularly vulnerable, and in the case of this product, the packaging is not adequate to protect the corners. Mine showed up with corners that had slight damage and I am pretty sure yours will too.
I have a very nice 3.5″ wood set from TheChessStore, and I can vouch for their high quality. The set you are looking at from eBay should be a very nice quality set that I think you would be very pleased with.
During the first half of the 19th century, a surge in the global popularity of chess brought about the demand for a uniform model of chess pieces. While the variety and styles of chess pieces that were in use at the time were extensive, they were decorative in nature and considered unsuitable for play. It is important to remember that chess has historically been enjoyed by the wealthy, a fact that is reflected in the designs of chess sets that dominated the marketplace. While aesthetically beautiful, the chess pieces of the period were not very practical. The chess pieces were expensive to produce, cumbersome to use, prone to tipping over and had such ornate details that they were unable to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. However the greatest disadvantage of these chess sets was the lack of uniformity of the pieces within a chess set – a player’s unfamiliarity with a particular chess set could affect the outcome of the game. Complaints such as these led to the search for a standard design of chess pieces. On September 1, 1849, #58607 – An Ornamental Design for a Set of Chess-Men was registered by Mr. Nathaniel Cooke under the British Ornamental Designs Act of 1842.
Essentially the chessboard is the same as the board used to play English draughts or American checkers, although the in play the chessboard is laid in a different orientation from draughts in that the board is placed between the opposing players with a white square in the bottom right hand corner.
