If you decide to go with a wooden board, chess pro Mr. Dlugy advised purchasing the flat as opposed to the fold-up style. “Solid boards are simply more stationary,” he said. Mr. Seirawan agreed: “A flat board is much preferred as the fold is distracting.”

We have recently added two new styles of chess boards to our selection. The first type is a very high quality Black Anegre and Maple board that has been produced with a high gloss. This board is a nice complement to our luxury Ebony black chess pieces. These two types of boards are available in sizes from just under 18 inches square to 23.6 inches square. The second type of board is a design exclusive to The Regency Chess Company. It features Black Anegre squares and a medium brown Palisander border. These boards are also finished in a gloss lacquer and they are also available in four different sizes. Both of these fine Spanish boards feature precisely inlaid veneers that have been made to a very high standard.

During the first half of the 19th century, a surge in the global popularity of chess brought about the demand for a uniform model of chess pieces. While the variety and styles of chess pieces that were in use at the time were extensive, they were decorative in nature and considered unsuitable for play. It is important to remember that chess has historically been enjoyed by the wealthy, a fact that is reflected in the artistic designs of chess sets that dominated the marketplace. While aesthetically beautiful, the chess pieces of the period were not very practical. The chess pieces were expensive to produce, cumbersome to use, prone to tipping over and had such ornate details that they were unable to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. However the greatest disadvantage of these chess sets was the lack of uniformity of the pieces within a chess set – a player’s unfamiliarity with a particular chess set could affect the outcome of the game. Complaints such as these led to the search for a standard design of chess pieces. On September 1, 1849, #58607 – An Ornamental Design for a Set of Chess-Men was registered by Mr. Nathaniel Cooke under the British Ornamental Designs Act of 1842.

The pieces look good and yes they don’t have bottoms, but I personally like them without the felt. It gives that chess piece sound when you move a piece, not silence as the felt ones do. To me, it seems extremely durable, I mean after all it is all wood, so unless you live with a gorilla, it should last. The cost can’t be beat either! I have seen a cardboard chess board and plastic pieces for almost as much as this one. A great buy and a great chess set!
Once again, thanks for the opinions and info. From what i’ve heard and research i’ve done, I’ve decided to go with the chess store for that set I listed above. My board is 19″ with 2.125″ squares, so I should be gtg with this set! I would not dare go with pieces larger than this though.
The chess squares grid can be screen printed directly onto the wood in black ink. Here you can have a perfectly serviceable chessboard. But because of the exalted status of the game of chess many people prefer to use a board more fitting to be used for ‘the game of kings’. Hence the demand around the world for craftsman built, beautiful boards with fine veneers and inlays that would be serviceable possibly for generations!

Even if you’re just in it for fun, Maxim Dlugy, a chess grandmaster and a consultant on “Pawn Sacrifice,” recommends simplicity. “Some of the decorative sets are difficult, less manageable to play with,” he said. “Of course, if you are willing to be Star Trek’s Mr. Spock out of sentimentality and your opponent feels the same, go for it.”
For the money the board is ok. It’s a four, maybe a three-star product. The box proudly declares that the item inside is a wooden chess board. That’s a bit of a stretch. It’s most likely particle board with veneer. And the product description claims that it is an inlaid wood board and, if it is, it manages to nearly pass for a high-resolution photo-finish.
Next, you’ll need to cut the panel into 2″ strips, which need to be exactly the same width as the first eight you cut earlier. Set the fence to 2″ and cut a piece of scrap material. Measure the piece with a digital caliper and adjust the fence as needed. When the fence is properly set, cut the panel into strips.
