We recently added two new styles of chess board to our huge range. The first is a very high quality black anegre and maple board that has been finished in a stunning gloss lacquer. These boards are available in sizes from around eighteen inches up to over twenty three inches. The second is a brand new design of chess board and is exclusive to The Regency Chess Company. It features black anegre squares and a rich brown palisander border. Like the black boards this is finished in a gloss lacquer and available in four different sizes. Both boards feature fine inlaid veneers and have been manufactured in Europe to a very high standard of precision and quality.

Even if you’re just in it for fun, Maxim Dlugy, a chess grandmaster and a consultant on “Pawn Sacrifice,” recommends simplicity. “Some of the decorative sets are difficult, less manageable to play with,” he said. “Of course, if you are willing to be Star Trek’s Mr. Spock out of sentimentality and your opponent feels the same, go for it.”

And remember that the board’s aesthetic can affect game play. The alternating colors on chessboards should be muted—“soft to the eye, not glaring or highly reflective, as players study the board for hours at a time,” said Mr. Seirawan. “Tanned wood earth tones are preferred. Harsh black and red are terrible.”

Next, you’ll need to cut the panel into 2″ strips, which need to be exactly the same width as the first eight you cut earlier. Set the fence to 2″ and cut a piece of scrap material. Measure the piece with a digital caliper and adjust the fence as needed. When the fence is properly set, cut the panel into strips.

I was very pleased when I opened this wood chess set. It is all wood and it doesn’t have the crack in the center like many boards with the hinges. I hate those since the hinges frequently break and the crack is a nuisance when pushing pieces over to the enemy territory. This board is solid, not too large to be trouble storing and not too small, as a lot of them are today that look more like a tic-tac-toe board. Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this one is just right.

I have a question. Between steps 7 and 8, did you run the endges through a jointer or otherwise true them up? Despite my best efforts, the edges after the second glue up are not perfect and I don’t think a border will glue on right. I’m wondering how running the checkerboard wood through the jointer would work, since the grains alternate.

I am waiting for a replacement set that supposedly closer matches the one I paid for.
