There are plenty of chess sets out there that are good, but why get good when you can get breathtaking. That’s right, take one look at this medium sized chess set and you’ll be at a loss for words. Th…
The fact is that many of our customers prefer their sets for display rather than to be use in games. Like a fine musical instrument, a vintage luxury automobile, or a first edition classic book, the luxury chess set is to be admired. Plenty of Regency Chess sets have been purchased by individuals who only have a rudimentary understanding of the game, if any at all. In fact, these are our typical customer for luxury sets – those who wish to see the set as a design accessory or a conversation piece. When you see our finely crafted pieces of fine hardwoods it is quite simple to understand why they are strictly on display. In particular, the expertise with which the knights are designed, hand carved, and finished make them the hallmark pieces in the set. As you can see, we also sell a larger version of the knights to be used as fine paperweights – that look especially classy on a fine wooden executive desk. Whether it be with a fine glass of port, your favourite cigar, or in the company of a connoisseur, we implore you to play a game or two on these luxurious heirloom sets – as life is simply too short to deny oneself such a luxury!
In addition to the bog standard boards we also sell a superb range of luxury boards. When you consider the quality of some chess pieces it seems silly to place such things on a basic chess board. If you want to give your luxury chess pieces the chess board they deserve then our range of luxury chess boards is the place to choose from. There is something magical about seeing the reflection of the chessmen in the surface of the board. Another aspect of our boards worth boasting about is the fine hand inlays of rich wood veneers. Our Italian chess boards are all hand inlaid to perfection from stunning cuts of richly grained woods. All of these fine examples are available through our website at an unbeatable price.

As well as flat boards, there is a vast range of folding chessboards. These are hinged boards that can become a casket to keep the pieces in. This is a clever way to store your whole chess set in a convenient, easily transportable box. The chequered board becomes the decorative design on the outside of the box. Simple and clever!
I have been burned twice in buying chess sets from less than reputable dealers. These “chess experts” claim they are selling the best thing since cream cheese, and then send me a set with uneven weights, miscolored pieces and overall bad workmanship. My biggest and most annoying experience has been with weights 1/2 popping out of the bottom of pieces, so they sit unevenly on the board. In other words, the bottoms are not 100% flat with the weight. Is this common amongst Staunton sets? I am guessing this is just a sign of bad workmanship.
The design offered functional benefits that hold up today. The varying heights of the pieces reduced the chance that pawns could “hide” behind other pieces, said Jon Crumiller, one of the foremost collectors of antique sets and a tournament player himself.

Now that The Regency Chess Company has begun stocking a range of outdoor chess sets you can enjoy your favourite game in the fresh air. During the first half of the 19th century, a surge in the global popularity of chess brought about the demand for a uniform model of chess pieces. While the variety and styles of chess pieces that were in use at the time were extensive, they were decorative in nature and considered unsuitable for play. It is important to remember that chess has historically been enjoyed by the wealthy, a fact that is reflected in the artistic designs of chess sets that dominated the marketplace. While aesthetically beautiful, the chess pieces of the period were not very practical. The chess pieces were expensive to produce, cumbersome to use, prone to tipping over and had such ornate details that they were unable to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. However the greatest disadvantage of these chess sets was the lack of uniformity of the pieces within a chess set – a player’s unfamiliarity with a particular chess set could affect the outcome of the game. Complaints such as these led to the search for a standard design of chess pieces. On September 1, 1849, #58607 – An Ornamental Design for a of Chess-Men was registered by Mr. Nathaniel Cooke under the British Ornamental Designs Act of 1842.

Please don’t believe for a second that this is real solid wood.. It’s not it’s a very very thin veneer walnut that is paper thin. I took this board and lightly sanded it to inlay into a game table I built. Guess what? The chess squares totally disappeared to a cheap particle board base. Do not, Do not buy this chinese piece of junk. Buy solid wood….THIS IS NOT!!!!

Some very early chess boards were made of leather. There are also boards made of stone, but mankind’s quest for novelty and originality has produced an overwhelming variety of unusual chessboards. There are boards where the squares have become circles. There is a board with an undulating Dali-like surface with peg holes to fit the pieces. Also a board that has scalloped squares on which the pieces can rock and spin. There are even chess boards made of pastry, using pieces made with pastry cutters…mmmmmm, tasty!
