That is a good eye and you are onto some of TheChessStores games! They sell a quality built set but their photos are NOT representative of what you will get. They use templates for different set auctions and have switched manufacturers, while still using old photos!

The wood used for the squares are Cherry and Norway Maple, the border is made from Norway maple. All of the wood used was harvested from local tress fallen during storms. After a really bad storm I ALWAYS drive around with a chainsaw offering to help and haul away some of their larger pieces (so glad I have a trailer).

I recently bought the Reproduced 1940 Soviet Club Chess Set in Ebony / Antiqued Box wood and I am impressed by its quality in every aspect of it. Most important to me is the incredible work in turning and, especially, the carving of the knights, which is always the touchstone in every chess set. I purchased the non glossy version of it and I am so pleasantly impressed with the orange colour of the light pieces and with the to a certain extent shiny deep black ebony look of the dark ones. To me, most amazing is the perfection and the detail on four knights: incredible. The stability, touch and feel of every chessman is also outstanding. Even more otstanding, all in all, when, as another buyer says, the set has been made out of only one or two pictures of the original. Finally, the ensemble is in full harmony betwwen all its elements. Last but not least is the 30% discount I got in the prize. Thank you ChessBazaar craftmen.

Considering how hard it is to find decent chess boards these days, I cautiously recommend this board as long as you don’t pay too much for it. It is manufactured by a toy company and you should estimate its value with that in mind.

I have been burned twice in buying chess sets from less than reputable dealers. These “chess experts” claim they are selling the best thing since cream cheese, and then send me a set with uneven weights, miscolored pieces and overall bad workmanship. My biggest and most annoying experience has been with weights 1/2 popping out of the bottom of pieces, so they sit unevenly on the board. In other words, the bottoms are not 100% flat with the weight. Is this common amongst Staunton sets? I am guessing this is just a sign of bad workmanship.

L.L. from NV writes, “I cannot begin to tell you how pleased I am with the chess set which arrived today. It’s so exquisite, I can’t stop looking at it. Though the pictures on your website are beautiful, they don’t do justice to actually seeing them in person.”

We have recently added two new styles of chess boards to our selection. The first type is a very high quality Black Anegre and Maple board that has been produced with a high gloss. This board is a nice complement to our luxury Ebony black chess pieces. These two types of boards are available in sizes from just under 18 inches square to 23.6 inches square. The second type of board is a design exclusive to The Regency Chess Company. It features Black Anegre squares and a medium brown Palisander border. These boards are also finished in a gloss lacquer and they are also available in four different sizes. Both of these fine Spanish boards feature precisely inlaid veneers that have been made to a very high standard.

Please don’t believe for a second that this is real solid wood.. It’s not it’s a very very thin veneer walnut that is paper thin. I took this board and lightly sanded it to inlay into a game table I built. Guess what? The chess squares totally disappeared to a cheap particle board base. Do not, Do not buy this chinese piece of junk. Buy solid wood….THIS IS NOT!!!!

I have a very nice 3.5″ wood set from TheChessStore, and I can vouch for their high quality. The set you are looking at from eBay should be a very nice quality set that I think you would be very pleased with.
