And remember that the board’s aesthetic can affect game play. The alternating colors on chessboards should be muted—“soft to the eye, not glaring or highly reflective, as players study the board for hours at a time,” said Mr. Seirawan. “Tanned wood earth tones are preferred. Harsh black and red are terrible.”

I have gone thru several boards thru-out the years and I have always wanted a good solid wood board. When the Toy contest opened and I saw the Maker-bot as a prize, I knew exactly what I wanted to enter.

During the first half of the 19th century, a surge in the global popularity of chess brought about the demand for a uniform model of chess pieces. While the variety and styles of chess pieces that were in use at the time were extensive, they were decorative in nature considered unsuitable for play. It is important to remember that chess has historically been enjoyed by the wealthy, a fact that is reflected in the artistic designs of chess sets that dominated the marketplace. While aesthetically beautiful, the chess pieces of the period were not very practical. The chess pieces were expensive to produce, cumbersome to use, prone to tipping over and had such ornate details that they were unable to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. However the greatest disadvantage of these chess sets was the lack of uniformity of the pieces within a chess set – a player’s unfamiliarity with a particular chess set could affect the outcome of the game. Complaints such as these led to the search for a standard design of chess pieces. On September 1, 1849, #58607 – An Ornamental Design for a Set of Chess-Men was registered by Mr. Nathaniel Cooke under the British Ornamental Designs Act of 1842.

Even if you’re just in it for fun, Maxim Dlugy, a chess grandmaster and a consultant on “Pawn Sacrifice,” recommends simplicity. “Some of the decorative sets are difficult, less manageable to play with,” he said. “Of course, if you are willing to be Star Trek’s Mr. Spock out of sentimentality and your opponent feels the same, go for it.”

Considering how hard it is to find decent chess boards these days, I cautiously recommend this board as long as you don’t pay too much for it. It is manufactured by a toy company and you should estimate its value with that in mind.

Next, you’ll need to cut the panel into 2″ strips, which need to be exactly the same width as the first eight you cut earlier. Set the fence to 2″ and cut a piece of scrap material. Measure the piece with a digital caliper and adjust the fence as needed. When the fence is properly set, cut the panel into strips.

M.N. from TX writes, “The chess sets arrived today. WOW, I had heard that the House of Staunton chess sets were the best around and now I can see why! Both sets are absolutely beautiful. I know I’m going to enjoy the Zagreb set.”

Just an update guys – I have had a bad experience with TheChessStore so far! The set arrived, and although the build quality is excellent (weights, felting, finishing), the set looks nothing like the eBay auction above  I came to find out from TheChessStore that they switched manufacturers and that is the reason for the different look. I am waiting for a replacement set that supposedly closer matches the one I paid for.
