If you know the game of chess, you will also know that a chess board has 64 squares as in eight rows and eight columns along with 32 pawns. The squares are organised in two different colors, white and black. If you are therefore looking for a new chess board, be it a wooden chess board or a magnetic one, Snapdeal will bring you one from its huge collection.
Collectable Chess Sets have been distinguished by both design and materials – namely fine dense hardwoods such as ebony, rosewood and red sandalwood. Some of these hardwoods are restricted from export by countries that have chosen to preserve their limited supplies. Exotic woods such as ebony can take up to 100 years for the tree to reach full maturation. The government of Brazil has placed a ban on the export of their rosewood stock. This wood was previously used in the crafting of musical instruments – renowned both for its aesthetically pleasing finish and its resonant tonal qualities..The government of India has restricted the export of all raw ebony and rosewood. The export of such finished products is allowed, but there may soon come a day that an outright ban is imposed. As a result of restricted supply, the world’s premier crafters of wooden chess pieces have stocked many years supply of these exotic woods. It is reasonable to conclude that an investment in a chess set crafted of fine woods is an excellent decision.
Once again, thanks for the opinions and info. From what i’ve heard and research i’ve done, I’ve decided to go with the chess store for that set I listed above. My board is 19″ with 2.125″ squares, so I should be gtg with this set! I would not dare go with pieces larger than this though.
D.O. from NJ writes, “The chess set and chess board are incredible. The pictures looked great, but they don’t do this set justice. I can’t believe there is a finer classic Staunton chess set out there.”
I have been burned twice in buying chess sets from less than reputable dealers. These “chess experts” claim they are selling the best thing since cream cheese, and then send me a set with uneven weights, miscolored pieces and overall bad workmanship. My biggest and most annoying experience has been with weights 1/2 popping out of the bottom of pieces, so they sit unevenly on the board. In other words, the bottoms are not 100% flat with the weight. Is this common amongst Staunton sets? I am guessing this is just a sign of bad workmanship.
Wooden chess boards range from rugged to the collectable for finer taste. A well chosen board brings your chess pieces to life like nothing else. Though there is no limit in the variety of wood boards available, practically all of them fall into two main material types:
I’m really not one to draw up and go by plans. I really don’t even like following plans. That being said, I do sketch ideas and make notes to figure out my rough needs for a project. This does have draw-backs at times, but I’m still able to “wing-it” with most projects.
F.B. from UT writes, “Thanks so much! My brother is going to love his first real chess set. You are the best. But you know that already. Keep me in the loop on how you plan to overtake all the crap plastic sets out there.”
I recently bought the Reproduced 1940 Soviet Club Chess Set in Ebony / Antiqued Box wood and I am impressed by its quality in every aspect of it. Most important to me is the incredible work in turning and, especially, the carving of the knights, which is always the touchstone in every chess set. I purchased the non glossy version of it and I am so pleasantly impressed with the orange colour of the light pieces and with the to a certain extent shiny deep black ebony look of the dark ones. To me, most amazing is the perfection and the detail on four knights: incredible. The stability, touch and feel of every chessman is also outstanding. Even more otstanding, all in all, when, as another buyer says, the set has been made out of only one or two pictures of the original. Finally, the ensemble is in full harmony betwwen all its elements. Last but not least is the 30% discount I got in the prize. Thank you ChessBazaar craftmen.
I was very pleased when I opened this wood chess set. It is all wood and it doesn’t have the crack in the center like many boards with the hinges. I hate those since the hinges frequently break and the crack is a nuisance when pushing pieces over to the enemy territory. This board is solid, not too large to be trouble storing and not too small, as a lot of them are today that look more like a tic-tac-toe board. Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this one is just right.
Well, the only thing I can really recommend is to never ever order chess sets via internet. You gotta buy such things like chairs and sofas where you want to try them out to see whether they are really comfy: So go into the next real chess store and let them show you their sets. Take a close look at the pieces, weigh them in your hands … it’s the only way to buy (plus it is the most fun).
Live or natural edge chess boards are made for Chess House customers by a very experienced craftsman. He carefully selects the wood for each board and creates an entirely unique look for each one with the natural edge contours surrounding a slightly raised playing field.
The pleasure and excitement of a chess game increases many fold when you lay the pieces on a beautiful wooden chess board. Like the chess pieces, the chess board is equally important as the game moves around on the chess board. If you already have a set of chess pieces and you want to buy a chess board online then you are at a right place. Our chess boards made from the exotic woods and are truly a work of art just like our chess pieces.
S.L. from CA writes, “The 4″Collector chess set that arrived at our home in Davis, CA is incomparable! My son & I joyfully unwrapped the boxwood & ebony pieces & admired their beauty, pawn by pawn, piece by piece.”

We have recently added two new styles of chess boards to our selection. The first type is a very high quality Black Anegre and Maple board that has been produced with a high gloss. This board is a nice complement to our luxury Ebony black chess pieces. These two types of boards are available in sizes from just under 18 inches square to 23.6 inches square. The second type of board is a design exclusive to The Regency Chess Company. It features Black Anegre squares and a medium brown Palisander border. These boards are also finished in a gloss lacquer and they are also available in four different sizes. Both of these fine Spanish boards feature precisely inlaid veneers that have been made to a very high standard.
What i’ve figured out though is that’s not actually what they look like, they’re using the 4″ King picture template in the “Pieces Only” listing for the 3 inch set, the 3.5 inch set and the 4 inch set. Here is what the 3″ itself actually looks like:
