We have recently added two new styles of chess boards to our selection. The first type is a very high quality Black Anegre and Maple board that has been produced with a high gloss. This board is a nice complement to our luxury Ebony black chess pieces. These two types of boards are available in sizes from just under 18 inches square to 23.6 inches square. The second type of board is a design exclusive to The Regency Chess Company. It features Black Anegre squares and a medium brown Palisander border. These boards are also finished in a gloss lacquer and they are also available in four different sizes. Both of these fine Spanish boards feature precisely inlaid veneers that have been made to a very high standard.
I was very pleased when I opened this wood chess set. It is all wood and it doesn’t have the crack in the center like many boards with the hinges. I hate those since the hinges frequently break and the crack is a nuisance when pushing pieces over to the enemy territory. This board is solid, not too large to be trouble storing and not too small, as a lot of them are today that look more like a tic-tac-toe board. Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this one is just right.
Heat things up with our fiery red chess boards! Our grey and red Briar board includes dramatic texture that appears almost liquid as it winds through each deep red and dark grey square. Our glossy black and red version includes a similar fluid texture complemented by the stark contrast of intense red on solid black.
The wood used for the squares are Cherry and Norway Maple, the border is made from Norway maple. All of the wood used was harvested from local tress fallen during storms. After a really bad storm I ALWAYS drive around with a chainsaw offering to help and haul away some of their larger pieces (so glad I have a trailer).
The pieces look good and yes they don’t have felt bottoms, but I personally like them without the felt. It gives that chess piece sound when you move a piece, not silence as the felt ones do. To me, it seems extremely durable, I mean after all it is all wood, so unless you live with a gorilla, it should last. The cost can’t be beat either! I have seen a cardboard chess board and plastic pieces for almost as much as this one. A great buy and a great chess set!
