JLP chess boards are a line of ultra-high quality hardwood chess boards made in the United States. If you want a fine gift for someone, the JLP line is hand-crafted, heirloom level choice. In the personalized chess boards category, you have the option of custom engraving a maple plaque for the JLP Players board.
First, you’ll need eight strips of 2″ wide solid wood in contrasting colors. Maple and walnut work well together, but there are several other good combinations. Cut our strips of each material to 2″ on the table saw. Measure one of the strips with a digital caliper and record the measurement; you’ll need it later. Your measurement needs to be accurate, so be sure to use a precision instrument like our 6″ steel digital caliper. Each strip should be about 18″ long.
Wood chess boards are the accessory of choice for many serious players. There are so many reasons to love this timeless material. Wood can be very strong and durable. It also tends to be less costly compared to similar alternatives. The best part is that wood offers nearly limitless customization options, which is made obvious by our stunning selection of the finest wooden boards.
Advance with Staunton. While chess originated in 6th-century India, it wasn’t until 1849 that the pieces we’re familiar with today were standardized. Known as Staunton Pattern pieces, they consist of a king crowned with a cross (the tallest piece), a coronet-topped queen, realistically rendered horse-head knights, castle-shaped rooks, slash-ingrained bishops and simple round-headed pawns.
The fact is that many of our customers prefer their sets for display rather than to be use in games. Like a fine musical instrument, a vintage luxury automobile, or a first edition classic book, the luxury chess set is to be admired. Plenty of Regency Chess sets have been purchased by individuals who only have a rudimentary understanding of the game, if any at all. In fact, these are our typical customer for luxury sets – those who wish to see the set as a design accessory or a conversation piece. When you see our finely crafted pieces of fine hardwoods it is quite simple to understand why they are strictly on display. In particular, the expertise with which the knights are designed, hand carved, and finished make them the hallmark pieces in the set. As you can see, we also sell a larger version of the knights to be used as fine paperweights – that look especially classy on a fine wooden executive desk. Whether it be with a fine glass of port, your favourite cigar, or in the company of a connoisseur, we implore you to play a game or two on these luxurious heirloom sets – as life is simply too short to deny oneself such a luxury!

To give your chessboard a finished look, add a 2″ border around the outside. Rip a few strips of either your light or dark stock and miter them to fit around the board. Then drill a few dowel holes to help you keep the border aligned when you attach it to the chessboard. Glue the border strips in place and sand the completed project to #220-grit.

For the money the board is ok. It’s a four, maybe a three-star product. The box proudly declares that the item inside is a wooden chess board. That’s a bit of a stretch. It’s most likely particle board with veneer. And the product description claims that it is an inlaid wood board and, if it is, it manages to nearly pass for a high-resolution photo-finish.
Veneer boards are common, with more designs and lower cost, they range in quality and most look great. The majority are made with a high density fiber core overlaid with a thin wood veneer. If you’re the type that wants solid wood construction, these might not be for you.
Great responses guys and thank you for the information! I will take a look at HOS and see if they have offerings on eBay. I was looking at one set in particular because I like the dark “white side” vs the ebony side. I am not sure if I am supposed to be posting a link like this here but it was this set. Is this good quality you think?
If you decide to go with a wooden board, chess pro Mr. Dlugy advised purchasing the flat as opposed to the fold-up style. “Solid boards are simply more stationary,” he said. Mr. Seirawan agreed: “A flat board is much preferred as the fold is distracting.”

Level the playing field. House of Staunton’s Mr. Sullivan suggested that novices begin with a quality roll-up board, which are often used in tournaments, then trade up to a more conventional wooden model. Roll-up sets are lightweight, portable and affordable (as low as $5). “And if you drop it, throw it or even spill on it, it’ll still be perfectly functional,” he said.
This is our first purchase of this item. It will supplement our first place prize for our tournament this year. I was incredibly impressed when it arrived. I’m not normally a fan of travel sets but this might just convert me.
D.B. from WA writes, “The Marshall chess set arrived last weekend. Opening the package was better than Christmas. To cut a long story short, this set is the finest I’ve ever seen or even held in my hands.”
R.F. from WY writes, “Just a note to thank you for the beautiful chess set I received, and the great(!) service that your business delivers. You were very patient and accommodating during my selection process. Now if I could only learn how to win a game…”
B.F. from Idaho writes,”My plastic Collectors chess set arrived today, and I must tell you, Yes, to me it IS well worth what I paid for it. It is massive, heavy, elegant and high-class. A true work of art.”
This white marble and black onyx set is quite nice. The carving in the black pieces is gorgeous, but the white pieces are a bit marred by the white marble color irregularities which can look like repaired fractures. I presume that they are just variegation in the marble, however. The chess board itself is very lovely – the white and black are very glossy and smooth. I haven’t actually given it to my spouse so the pieces have not yet been played with, but I think that the markings, while not completely traditional for bishops in particular, will be adequate to allow for stimulating games with beautiful stone pieces.
